With Nanjing Road to the north, Shanghai People Square is located in the heart of Shanghai and is the demarcation point of East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. With Yan'an Gaojia Road in the south, Huangpi North Road in the west and Central Tibet Road in the east, it is a prosperous place that people can look around.

This area was once the racetrack seen as 'no'. 1 Far Eastern Hippodrome' but was later destroyed. In 1949, People's Street was built across the center of the district with People's Park being built on the north side and People's Square on the southern part. By the end of 1993, through a comprehensive reconstruction, it covered an area of ​​about 140 thousand square meters and became the largest public square in the city.

After renovation, the new Municipal Government Palace is located in the center of the North People's Square, while the Shanghai Museum, designed to resemble a Chinese cooking pot, is located to its south. Surrounded on both sides by green belts 17 meters wide, People's Avenue runs through the center of the square. In the northwest corner is the Shanghai Grand Theatre, a massive building made almost entirely of glass which is balanced by the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall in the east and on the northeast side is a subway station. Along the south side of People's Street, there are many large underground structures, including Hong Kong Famous Brands Street and Demi Shopping Center, the largest underground city transformer substation in Asia and the largest underground parking garage in Shanghai.

The central square with an area of ​​3,844 square meters is located in the south side of Al Shaab Street. There are two small squares on either side of the central square. The eastern square is Xuri Square (Rising Sun Square) while the south is Mingyue Square (Light Moon Square). In the center of the central square is the circular Musical Fountain (320 square metres). The red, yellow and blue colored glass edges of the fountain provide a beautiful and stunning colorful aura. The fountain is surrounded by four copper-purple arcades while the center of the fountain highlights the city grounds. At each of the four entry steps, there are inscriptions showing traits of traditional culture.

People's Street, a sidewalk 600 m long and 32 m wide, intersects with People's Square with a 5.5 m wide green belt and 6.5 m wide lanes for non-motorized vehicles on both sides of the road. The total green belt of People's Square is about 80,000 square meters and extends gradually in all directions from the circular fountain.

Blue and white pigeons can be seen on the southwest side of People's Square. Every day visitors will see thousands of doves that provide a peaceful and wonderful atmosphere there. Moreover, the square is one of the important transportation hubs in the city, so there are plenty of stops on public traffic routes around it. Visitors can get there easily.

  2. Take the City Sightseeing Bus Line 1 or Line 2 to get there.
  3. Take bus 46, 49, 123, 145, 312, 451, or Shangchuan Special Line and get off at Renmin Guangchang (People's Square) stop.
